We published the revised Standard for Childhood Practice in 2015. Since it was first introduced in 2007 more than 1,400 people have gained qualifications based on the standard. Managers of early learning and childcare settings, such as nurseries, out of school clubs and playgroups, are required to have a childhood practice qualification in order to be registered with the SSSC.

Making a difference

Evidence shows the best experience for children comes from the best qualified staff, including where the manager has a degree level award. We published research into how effective the childhood practice award has been in the report Taking the first steps - is Childhood Practice working (2014).

We have also published a report, Childhood Practice in Action which confirms qualified early years and childcare workers give children the best possible start in life.
