Dementia learning and development
We are working with NHS Education for Scotland (NES) and other partners to make sure social service workers and health workers achieve the knowledge and skills they need for providing the best possible quality of care and support to people with dementia, their families and carers.

Background to Promoting Excellence
The Promoting Excellence learning framework defines the knowledge, skills and values that workers must hold to improve the experience of care and support for people with dementia, their families and carers. We developed Promoting Excellence on behalf of the Scottish Government, in response to a commitment made in Scotland’s first National Dementia Strategy.
Promoting Excellence was launched alongside the Standards of Care for People with Dementia in Scotland in 2011. The standards help people with dementia and their carers understand their rights. They also help health and social service workers to understand what is expected of them in their roles, so that workers listen to people with dementia and support them to stay safe and well.
Since the launch of Promoting Excellence, we have worked in partnership with NES to promote access to dementia learning across our joint workforce, which includes developing a range of free learning resources and programmes.
Scotland’s second National Dementia Strategy was launched in June 2013. This three year strategy builds on the first and contains 17 commitments to continue to drive forward improvements in care and support. We are continuing in our partnership work with NES over the life of this strategy. Our work is overseen by a programme board chaired by the Chief Executive of Alzheimer Scotland and includes close and productive working with the Scottish Dementia Working Group, the National Dementia Carers Action Network and many other agencies.
