Funding your social work training

Studying for the undergraduate degree in social work?

The Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) will pay the tuition fees for all eligible full time Scottish and EU students studying at publicly funded institutions in Scotland; the level of family income does not matter.

Tuition fees £3,415 (maximum)
Maintenance Grant £3,314 (maximum)
(Above example includes college travel for students living at home) 

For post raduate students studying for social work qualifications at:

  • University of Dundee
  • University of Edinburgh
  • The Robert Gordon University
  • Glasgow Caledonian University
  • Glasgow School of Social Work (Strathclyde University)
  • University of Stirling.

Universities nominate eligible students, from a quota, for a bursary for tuition fees, maintenance grant and range of allowances, including books and travel relating to practice learning. Tuition fees are paid directly to the relevant university.

Other sources of funding

Students can apply for a loan to the Student Loans Company. They can be contacted on 0845 026 2019 or: www.slc.co.uk

You may be able to apply for a Career Development Loan. These loans are available to students studying in England, Scotland and Wales only. For more information phone 0800 100 900.

From 1 April 2011 the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) will deliver a part-time fee grant, previously called ILA500. Learners must have been in Scotland for 3 years, have an income of less than £22,000 per year (or benefits), be undertaking a part-time course at SCQF levels 7-11, complete at least 40 SCQF credits per year and be enrolled with an approved Scottish centre.
