Compulsory registration dates have now been announced by Scottish Ministers for all workers in housing support and care at home services. This means that workers in these services must be registered by the following dates:
- Managers – 2014 (this part of the Register is open, managers can apply now)
- Supervisors – 2017 (this part of the Register will open in 2014)
- Support workers – 2020 (this part of the Register will open in 2017)
Workers who are already in post must register by the above dates, however, any new manager, supervisor or support worker in a housing support service or care at home service who is not registered with another regulatory body eg Nursing and Midwifery Council, must achieve registration within six months of commencing employment. This will apply to new workers in a supervisor role when that part of the Register opens in 2014 and for workers in 2017.
If your service is registered with Social Care and Social Work Improvement Scotland (SCSWIS) both as a care at home and a housing support service and your staff work in both services they must advise the SSSC that they are applying for registration on both parts of the Register.

Are you an employer?
It is very important that employers know their responsibilities about registration because if they continue to employ practitioners who are not registered with the SSSC or another regulatory body they will be committing an offence under government legislation which brought in compulsory registration.
