In response to the announcement from the Scottish Government on the increase in the number of social workers highlighted through the latest official statistics, Anna Fowlie, Chief Executive of the SSSC said:
"These latest statistics are very encouraging. We've come a long way in the last decade and I'm pleased to see more people choosing social work as a rewarding career.
"Social work and social care are vital to the success of our communities and we have a commitment to making sure that we have the right people with the right skills, reflecting the diversity of our communities. Developments over the last ten years have seen a real investment in this workforce. The SSSC Code of Practice for Social Service Workers, the honours degree in social work and the Continuous Learning Framework are just some of the elements helping to put social work on a par with other professions.
"There are still challenges ahead but our annual trends report on social work education show that more people see this as an attractive career path and this is reflected these statistics and in wider research carried out by the Social Work Changes Lives campaign which shows that public perceptions of social work are improving."
