The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) has recently issued a call for evidence on the level of an annual limit on Tier 2 and associated policies. The Tier 2 route is one of the ways that employers can recruit migrant workers from outwith the European Economic Area (EEA). There is an annual limit on the number of workers that can enter the UK via this route. The current consultation seeks views on the limit for 2012. The consultation also seeks views on the implications of raising the qualification threshold for entry via Tier 2 from National Qualification Framework (NQF) level 4 to level 6. This latter proposal may mean that employers would no longer be able to recruit "Residential and day care managers" from outwith the EEA. The right to recruit social workers would remain unaffected by this change.
The consultation and covering letter can be accessed from the MAC's website: http://www.bia.homeoffice.gov.uk/mac
The closing date for responses is 21 December 2011.
The SSSC will be responding to MAC. We would welcome any assistance you could provide us with this. Please contact Neil Macleod, Education and Workforce Development Adviser to discuss: Neil.Macleod@sssc.uk.com. We would be particularly keen to hear from you if your service employs “residential and day care managers” or “senior care workers” from outwith the European Economic Area. We’d also be keen to hear from you if you have difficulty recruiting workers to fill these posts.
The MAC have also published two new reports:
- An analysis of the settlement rights of migrants in Tier 1 and Tier 2
- A review of the transitional restrictions on access of Bulgarian and Romanian nationals to the UK Labour Market
Both reports are also available from the MAC's website
