All practitioners working in day care of children services must be registered with the SSSC by 30 September 2011.
What if practitioners don't have the qualification?
Workers don't have to have achieved the relevant qualification for the role before applying to be registered with the SSSC. As long as a worker is carrying out a practitioner role they can be registered with a condition which allows them three years to achieve the relevant qualifications.
What is a 'practitioner'?:
- workers who identify and meet the care, support and learning needs of children and contribute to the development and quality assurance of informal learning activities and/or curriculum. They may also be responsible for the supervision of other workers.
Anyone carrying out these duties must apply for registration as a practitioner. In addition, any worker in a day care of children service who has the sole responsibility for the health and safety of children would be required to register as a practitioner. Based on the information gathered by the SSSC and Social Care and Social Work Improvement Scotland (SCSWIS) most workers within day care of children services are working as practitioners.
Employers responsibilities
It is very important that employers know their responsibilities about registration because if they continue to employ practitioners who are not registered with the SSSC or another regulatory body they will be committing an offence under government legislation which brought in compulsory registration.
