SSSC annual conference looks at building a confident social service workforce
A confident social service workforce will have a positive impact on the delivery of high quality services to the people who need them most, increasing public confidence in the sector.
Aimed at frontline social workers, social service employers and training managers across Scotland, over 280 delegates will explore the theme of confidence and the positive impact it can have on workers, organisations, people who use social services and carers at the Scottish Social Services Council’s annual conference on 9 November at the SECC, Glasgow.
As the regulatory body for the social service workforce in Scotland the SSSC is committed to developing a confident, competent and valued workforce.
Robert Brown Deputy Minister for Education and Young People will address the conference and keynote speaker Dr Carol Craig, Director of the Centre for Confidence and Well-being will give a national perspective. Key speakers also include TV presenter Kaye Adams and Dr Brian Durward, Dean of School of Health and Social Care, Glasgow Caledonian University.
Morag Alexander, Convener of the SSSC explains:
“Part of a social service worker’s job is making decisions that can have a huge impact on the lives of others. And we know what happens if something goes wrong. This conference will look at how we ensure public confidence in social service workers. But will also look at what makes a confident workforce and how we develop it within the social service sector.”

Investors in People celebration for Scottish Social Services Council
The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) has been recognised as an Investor in People after achieving the Standard on the 29 November 2006. The prestigious award is given to organisations that have been formally recognised by Investors in People (IiP) as having a commitment to being progressive in supporting the training and development of their employees.
Today (12 December 2006), Margaret McCollam, Director Strategy and Skills, Scottish Enterprise Tayside, presented the official IiP plaque and certificate to SSSC employees and members. The award hand-over took place at the SSSC’s annual lunch event which precedes the final Council meeting of the year.
Margaret McCollam, SE Tayside’s Director, Strategy & Skills, congratulated the SSSC on achieving IIP status. “Investing in people works. Thousands of organisations have found that improving their people is an effective way to improve their business and they can point to real benefits. I am delighted that SSSC has met the Standard and this will lead to a framework for continuous development of its people and its business.”
Convener of the SSSC, Morag Alexander commented:
“We are absolutely delighted that the SSSC has received this official Investors in People recognition. As an organisation it means we are developing well and to a high standard which in turn will benefit our stakeholders.
“As the SSSC is responsible for regulating the training and education of the social service workforce this award is particularly welcome as it is excellent to be able to lead by example.”
To successfully gain the IIP official recognition the SSSC used the IIP flexible framework which focuses on developing strategies to improve the performance of the organisation.
Over the past 12 years independent research has consistently shown that the Investors in People Standard provides real business benefits to organisations of all sizes and across all sectors.
