About the sector

In September 2005 it became mandatory for social workers to register with the SSSC. Social work students are also required to register with the SSSC.

Since 2004 other social service workers have been invited to register with the SSSC and from 2009 required registration has been introduced for specific groups of workers.

The Register is qualification based and applicants must satisfy a number of criteria for registration and meet the SSSC's Post Registration Training and Learning (PRTL) requirements. Registrants are expected to meet agreed standards of conduct, practice, education and training.

Those registered with the SSSC must abide by the SSSC Code of Practice for Social Service Workers.

  • Fact: There are over 198,000 social service workers in Scotland, providing care and support to some of the most vulnerable sections of our society.
  • Fact: By September 2010 39,538 workers have registered with the SSSC of which 10,583 are social workers.
  • Fact: By August 2010, the SSSC has distributed over 739,600 copies of the Codes of Practice for Social Service Workers and Employers.

About the SSSC and the Care Inspectorate

Both bodies were set up under the same legislation but with different roles in the drive to improve standards of care in Scotland:

  • the Care Inpectorate regulates and inspects service provision
  • the SSSC regulates and registers the social service workforce and its education and training.
