Compulsory registration and employers

Many groups of social service workers are now required to register with the SSSC if they are not already registered with another regulatory body eg Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Workers who start in a position that requires registration will have six months from their start date in which to register with the SSSC.

Employers have a legal responsibility to ensure that all of their staff are appropriately registered.  Employers would be committing an offence if they continue to employ an unregistered worker for more than six months after their start date if they are working in a role that requires registration.

What happens if a worker doesn't have the required qualifications?

If an applicant does not currently hold all the required qualifications they can still be granted registration subject to the condition that they achieve the required qualifications within a specified period (normally the first three year period of registration).

It's very important that you are aware of the status of your workers' registration to support them to meet the requirements of their registration.

Registration whilst on maternity leave

If an employee goes on maternity leave and they are employed in a post where registration with the SSSC is required to continue working, they must maintain their registration during their period of maternity leave.

Check your worker's registration status

A worker's registration status can change during their registration period eg they can be removed from the Register or they can gain a required qualification.

Check the SSSC register regularly to ensure your staff keep their registration up-to-date or to check the current status of their registration.  You can do this by logging in to your MySSSC account or on the public facing register.
