What qualifications do I need to register with the SSSC?

A black and white photo of children with social service workers. Text along the bottom of the image says To register a worker must satisfy the criteria for registration. This includes holding the appropriate qualifications for the job they do.

Applicants for registration who do not hold the required qualifications may, if they meet all the other eligibility criteria for registration eg evidence of ‘good character', be granted registration subject to the condition that they achieve the required qualifications within a specified period - normally their first three year period of registration.

You will be registered by the function that you carry out in your job, rather than your job title. Please click on the option below that best describes you. Clicking on the relevant function will lead you to the qualifications you are required to have for registration with the SSSC.

Social workers, social work students and Care Commission Officers are listed separately below the table.

If your job title is Social Worker and you are carrying out the functions of a social worker you are required to register with the SSSC. You should hold a degree in Social Work or equivalent.

If you are a social work student studying the new degree, postgraduate or fast track programme you must be registered with the SSSC for the duration of your course.

To be registered as a Care Commission Officer, you must be employed by the Scottish Commission for the Regulation of Care (Care Commission) as a Care Commission Officer and hold or gain a practitioner qualification in an occupation that is necessary for the delivery of a regulated care service. From 31 March 2010 Care Commission Officers are required to be registered with the SSSC.

If your job function is not described then you are not currently required to register with the SSSC.

* Guidance for training providers delivering management and supervision programmes

When registering with the SSSC managers of services must hold or gain any award in management that is certificated at or above SCQF Level 8* (minimum of 60 credits) showing evidence the award has been mapped against the National Occupational Standards (NOS) Leadership and Management for Care Services.

Training providers wishing to confirm that their management programmes lead to an award that fulfils this criteria need to provide evidence to the SSSC that the programme is recognised within their own institution as a management programme and that it fulfils the criteria of mapping outlined above. This evidence may be in the form of a grid showing where the institution's course maps to the required NOS. The evidence should be accompanied by a letter from the Academic Registrar, Dean or Head of Faculty confirming the course meets the criteria outlined above and the quality assurance standard set by their own institution, QAA or the appropriate awarding body.
