Support workers are defined as workers who have delegated responsibility for providing care and support to children.
You must obtain one of the following qualifications:
- SVQ 2 Children's Care Learning and Development (at SCQF Level 6)
- SVQ 2 Playwork (at SCQF Level 6)
- National Certificate Early Education and Childcare.
or
- any qualification in the category qualifications for practitioners.
Additional accepted qualifications for support workers in day care of children services
- National Progression Award Playwork and Child Care
- OU Certificate in Early Years Practice
- PDA in Education Support Assistance (at SCQF Level 6)
Acceptable QCF Diplomas for practitioners and support workers in day care of children services
- Level 3 Diploma in Children's Care Learning and Development, plus the SQA unit Protect and Promote Children's Rights (DT4M04)
- Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People's Workforce, plus the SQA unit Promote the Wellbeing and Protection of Children and Young People (DK4H04) plus the SQA unit Play in Early Education and Child Care (DM4112) with one of the following SQA units:
- Child Development (An Introduction) (ED2L12)
- Child Development: Birth to twelve years (Higher) (DM3X12)
- Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (Children and Young People) from Wales or Northern Ireland plus the SQA unit Promote the Wellbeing and Protection of Children and Young People (DK4H04) plus the SQA unit Play in Early Education and Child Care (DM4112) with one of the following SQA units:
- Child Development (An Introduction)(ED2L12)
- Child Development: Birth to twelve years (Higher)(DM3X12)
- Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care Services (Children and Young People's Advanced Practice) from Wales or Northern Ireland
- Level 5 Diploma in Leadership in Health and Social Care and Children and Young People's Services.
Previously accepted qualifications for support workers in a day care of children service
Other qualifications have previously been included in the qualification criteria for support workers. You may hold one of them. The SSSC continues to accept these awards for registration.
- SQA National Certificate Group Award: Early Education and Child Care (Higher)
- NVQ Children's Care Learning and Development (Level 2)
- Scottish Progression Award; Children's Care and Play
- Scottish Progression Award Playwork with the course Introducing Playwork (SkillsActive)
- Scottish Progression Award Playwork with the SQA unit Developing an Understanding of Working with Children: Workplace Experience (Higher) (DM5M12)
- Professional Development Award Support for Learning Assistants
- Professional Development Award Classroom Assistant
- SVQ Level 2 Caring for Children and Young People Plus SQA unit Play in Early Education and Child Care (Higher)(DM4112) with one of the following:
- SQA unit Child Development: An introduction (ED2 L12)
- SQA unit Child Development: Birth to Twelve Years (Higher)(DM3X12)
- S/NVQ Early Years Care and Education( Level 2)
- S/NVQ Childcare and Education (Level 2)
- SVQ Classroom Assistant (Level 2)
- SVQ Classroom Assistant (Level 3)
- OU Certificate in Early Years Practice
- Senior Certificate in the Residential Care of Children and Young People
- BA Childhood or Early Childhood Studies
- Group of 21 credits from the range of SCOTVEC/SQA national certificate, child care units listed in
list A previously recognised for the purposes of pre-registration with the Scottish Child Care Education Board).
