Qualifications for supervisors in housing support services

A supervisor is employed in providing and supervising the provision of care and/or support provided directly to a user of a service within a housing support service. 

You must obtain one of the following qualifications:

  • SVQ 3 Health and Social Care (at SCQF Level 7)
  • SVQ 3 Community Justice: Work with Victims, Survivors and Witnesses (Route 1) (at SCQF Level 7)
  • SVQ 3 Community Justice: Working with Offending Behaviour (at SCQF Level 7)
  • HNC Social Care (2005 revised award G7ME15)
  • Certificate in Deafblind Studies with the Diploma Deafblind Studies and The Practice Unit in Deafblind studies
plus
  • An additional supervisory or management qualification containing supervision or management theory and practice suitable for a supervisor of a care service with a minimum of 15 credits at SCQF level 7 or above

or

  • BA (Hons) Social Work (or equivalent)
  • BA (Hons) Social Pedagogy (University of Aberdeen)
  • Degree or Diploma in Community Education or equivalent as recognised by the Standards Council for Community Learning and Development for Scotland Approvals Committee
  • A qualification meeting the registration requirements of the General Teaching Council, Nursing and Midwifery Council, General Medical Council or the following professional groups regulated by the Health Professions Council:
    • Occupational Therapists
    • Art, Music and Drama Therapists
    • Physiotherapists
    • Speech and Language Therapists
    • Practitioner Psychologists.

Acceptable QCF Diploma for supervisors in housing support services

  • Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (Adults) from Wales and Northern Ireland plus the SQA unit Promote choice, well-being and the protection of all individuals (DK4104)
  • Level 3 Diploma In Health and Social Care (Children and Young People) from Wales and Northern Ireland plus the SQA unit Promote the well-being and protection of children and young people (DK4H04)
  • Level 3 Diploma for The Children and Young People's Workforce plus the SQA unit Promote the well-being and protection of children and young people (DK4H04)

plus 

  • an additional supervisory or management qualification containing supervision or management theory and practice suitable for a supervisor of a care service with a minimum of 15 credits at SCQF level 7 or above. 

Previously accepted qualifications for supervisors in housing support services

Other qualifications have previously been included in the qualification criteria for supervisors in housing support services.  You may hold one of them. The SSSC continues to accept these awards for registration.

  • S/NVQ Care, Health and Social Care, Community Justice (Work with Offending Behaviour) or Community Justice (Work with Victims, Survivors and Witnesses or Community Justice (Work with Offending Behaviour) or Community Justice (Work with Victims, Survivors and Witnesses) (Level 4) to include or with the addition of a value base unit ('O' unit or Principles of Care) ?
  • A qualification meeting the corporate membership requirements of the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH)
  • BA Curative Education (University of Aberdeen)
  • Diploma Curative Education (University of Aberdeen)
  •  

or

  • SVQ Promoting Independence (Level 3)
  • SVQ Care (Level 3)
  • NVQ  Community Justice (Work with Offending Behaviour)(Level 3) or Community Justice (Work with Victims, Survivors and Witnesses) (Level 3) to include or with the addition of a value base unit ('O' unit or Principles of Care)
  • Higher Education Certificate in Care or Person Centred Approaches for Social Care Workers (Queen Margaret University College)
  • HNC Social Care (all other awards pre 2005) with the SVQ Health and Social Care unitsDK4R04;DK4K04;DK5704
  • S/NVQ Care (Level 3) with HNC Social Care (Combined Award)
  • BA (Hons) Learning Disability Studies (University of Manchester)
  • Diploma in the Training and Further Education of Mentally Handicapped Adults
  • Diploma Domiciliary Care Management

Plus

  • An additional supervisory or management qualification containing supervision or management theory and practice suitable for a supervisor of a care service with a minimum of 15 credits at SCQF level 7 or above.

or

The following qualifications are acceptable if they were gained previous to the date they were removed:

  • VRQ level 3/SCQF level 6 CIH National Certificate in Housing – Supported Housing Pathway (removed May 2010) plus SVQ Principles of Care (Level 3) unit HSC35.
  • S/NVQ Housing, CIH Joint Award (Level 3) (removed May 2011)* plus SVQ Principles of Care (Level 3) unit HSC35.

  • An additional supervisory or management qualification containing supervision or management theory and practice suitable for a supervisor of a care service with a minimum of 15 credits at SCQF level 7 or above.

*This refers to the CIH level 3 Certificate in Housing for Support Workers which is a combination of CIH Level 3 Certificate in Housing (also known as VRQ Level 3 / SCQF Level 6 CIH National Certificate in Housing) plus HSC 35 or S/NVQ level 3 Housing and CIH Level 3 Certificate in Housing.
