Qualifications for school hostel workers and workers in residential special schools previously excepted from regulation by the Care Inspectorate who have supervisory responsibilities

You must obtain one of the following qualifications:

  • BA (Hons) Social Work (or equivalent)
  • SVQ 4 Health and Social Care (at SCQF Levels 8 and 9)
  • BA Social Pedagogy(University of Aberdeen)
  • A qualification meeting the registration requirements of the General Teaching Council (Scotland), Nursing and Midwifery Council, General Medical Council or the following professional groups regulated by the Health Professions Council:
    • Occupational Therapists
    • Art, Music and Drama Therapists
    • Physiotherapists
    • Speech and Language Therapists
    • Practitioner Psychologists
  • Degree or Diploma in Community Education or equivalent as recognised by the Standards Council for Community Learning and Development for Scotland Approvals Committee.

Acceptable QCF Diplomas for school hostel workers and workers in residential special schools previously excepted from regulation by the Care Inspectorate who have supervisory responsibilities

  • Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care Services (Children and Young People's Advanced Practice) from Wales and Northern Ireland
  • Level 5 Diploma in Leadership in Health and Social Care and Children and Young People's Services
  • Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care Services (Children and Young People's Management) from Wales
  • Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care Services (Adults Advanced Practice) from Wales and Northern Ireland
  • Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care Services (Adults Management) from Wales and Northern Ireland
  • Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care Services (Adults Residential Management) from Wales and Northern Ireland.

Previously accepted qualifications for school hostel workers and workers in residential special schools previously excepted from regulation by the Care Commission who have supervisory responsibilities

Other qualifications have previously been included in the qualification criteria for school hostel workers and workers in residential special schools who have supervisory responsibilities. You may hold one of them. The SSSC continues to accept these awards for registration.

  • NVQ Health and Social Care (Level 4)
  • BA Curative Education (University of Aberdeen).
