Practitioners are defined as workers who provide care and support to adults using residential care and who have responsibility for co-ordinating the implementation of care plans. This may include holding keyworker responsibilities.
If you do not hold a current qualification you must obtain one of the following qualifications :
- SVQ 3 Health and Social Care (at SCQF Level 7)
- SVQ Level 3 Community Justice: Work with Victims, Survivors and Witnesses (Route 1)
- SVQ 3 Community Justice: Working with Offending Behaviour (at SCQF Level 7)
- BA (Hons) Social Work (or equivalent)
- Certificate in Deafblind Studies with the Diploma in Deafblind Studies and The Practice Unit in Deafblind studies
- BA Social Pedagogy(University of Aberdeen)
- Degree or Diploma in Community Education or equivalent as recognised by the Standards Council for Community Learning and Development for Scotland Approvals Committee
- A qualification meeting the registration requirements of the General Teaching Council, Nursing and Midwifery Council, General Medical Council or the following professional groups regulated by the Health Professions Council:
- Occupational Therapists
- Art, Music and Drama Therapists
- Physiotherapists
- Speech and Language Therapists
- Practitioner Psychologists.
Additional accepted qualifications for practioners in care home services for adults
- SVQ 4 Health and Social Care (At SCQF Levels 8 and 9)
- HNC Social Care (2005 revised award G7ME15)
Acceptable QCF Diplomas acceptable for practitioners in care home services for adults
- Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (Adults) from Wales and Northern Ireland plus the SQA unit Promote choice, well-being and the protection of all individuals (DK4104)
- Level 3 Diploma In Health and Social Care (Children and Young People) from Wales and Northern Ireland plus the SQA unit Promote the well-being and protection of children and young people (DK4H04)
- Level 3 Diploma for The Children and Young People's Workforce plus the SQA unit Promote the well-being and protection of children and young people (DK4H04).
Previously accepted qualifications for practitioners in a care home service for adults
Other qualifications have previously been included in the qualification criteria for practitioners. You may hold one of them. The SSSC continues to accept these awards for registration.
- NVQ Health and Social Care (Level 3)
- HNC Social Care (all other awards pre-2005) with the SVQ Health and Social Care units DK4R04; DK4K04; DK5704
- SVQ Care or Promoting Independence (Level 3) or Caring for Children and Young People (Level 3) with a value base Unit ('O' or Principles of Care)
- SVQ Care (Level 3) with HNC Social Care (Combined Award)
- NVQ Health and Social Care (Level 4)
- S/NVQ Care (Level 4)
- NVQ Community Justice (Work with Offending Behaviour) (Level 3) or Community Justice (Work with Victims, Survivors and Witnesses) (Level 3) to include or with the addition of a value base Unit ('O' or Principles of Care)
- SVQ Community Justice (Work with Offending Behaviour) (Level 4) or Community Justice (Work with Victims, Survivors and Witnesses) (Level 4)

- BA Curative Education (Aberdeen University)
- Diploma Curative Education (Aberdeen University)
- Diploma in Teaching Mentally Handicapped Adults
- Diploma in the Training and Further Education of Mentally Handicapped Adults
- Diploma in Domiciliary Care Management
- Certificate in Residential Care of Children and Young People
- Senior Certificate Residential Care of Children and Young People
- CCETSW Certificate Residential Social Work.
