Managers are defined as workers who are responsible specifically for the management of boarding in independent schools who provide school care accommodation services.
They are involved in the planning and quality assurance of the care provided to the children as boarders. They are responsible for managing staff and resources and will contribute to the strategic planning and quality assurance of the accommodation service in their school.
If you do not hold a current qualification you must obtain one of the following qualifications:
- BA (Hons) Social Work (or equivalent)
- SVQ 4 Health and Social Care (at SCQF Levels 8 and 9)
- BA Social Pedagogy(University of Aberdeen)
- Degree or Diploma in Community Education or equivalent as recognised by the Standards Council for Community Learning and Development for Scotland Approvals Committee
- A qualification meeting the registration requirements of the General Teaching Council (Scotland), Nursing and Midwifery Council, General Medical Council or the following professional groups regulated by the Health Professions Council:
- Occupational Therapists
- Art, Music and Drama Therapists
- Physiotherapists
- Speech and Language Therapists
- Practitioner Psychologists
plus
- SVQ 4 Leadership and Management for Care Services (LMCS) (at SCQF Level 8)
- Any award in management that is certified at or above SCQF level 8 (minimum of 60 credits) showing evidence the award has been mapped against the National Occupational Standards (NOS): Leadership and Management for Care Services.
Acceptable QCF Diplomas for managers in independent boarding schools
- Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care Services (Children and Young People's Advanced Practice) from Wales and Northern Ireland
- Level 5 Diploma in Leadership in Health and Social Care and Children and Young People's Services
- Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care Services (Adults Management) from Wales and Northern Ireland
- Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care Services (Adults Residential Management) from Wales and Northern Ireland
- Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care Services (Children and Young People's Management) from Wales
- Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care Services (Children and Young People's Residential Management) from Wales.
plus
- SVQ Leadership and Management for Care Services (LMCS) Level 4
or
- Any award in management that is certificated at or above SCQF Level 8 (Minimum of 60 credits) showing evidence the award has been mapped against the National Occupational Standards (NOS): Leadership and Management for Care Services.
Previously accepted qualifications for managers in independent boarding schools
Other qualifications have previously been included in the qualification criteria for managers in independent boarding schools. You may hold one of them. The SSSC continues to accept these awards for registration.
- NVQ Health and Social Care (Level 4)
- S/NVQ Care (Level 4)
- BA Curative Education (University of Aberdeen)
Plus one of the following
- SVQ Leadership and Management for Care Services (LMCS) Level 4
- Any award in management that is certificated at or above SCQF Level 8 (minimum of 60 credits) showing evidence the award has been mapped against the National Occupational Standards (NOS): Leadership and Management for Care Services
- SVQ Registered Manager in Health and Social Care (Level 4) (Registered Manager's Award)
- SVQ Manager in Residential Child Care (Level 4)
- S/NVQ Management (Level 4)
- an assessed programme of study (either through a taught programme or by portfolio) where a minimum of 60 credit points covers management, at post qualifying or advanced level, awarded by the PQ Consortium for Social Work in Scotland.
