Workers in housing support services applying to be registered with the SSSC

The SSSC began registering managers in housing support services from 21 January 2011.

From 31 January 2014 existing managers in housing support services are required by Scottish Government to be registered with the SSSC.

Any new members of staff such as a manager who has never worked in the sector before, and is not registered with another regulatory body, must achieve registration within six months of commencing employment. This requirement will apply to any new member of staff, in the prescribed groups for registration, who commences employment after the 21 January 2011.

Other groups of workers in housing support services include:

  • supervisors of housing support services
  • housing support workers.

More detailed timescales for registering all groups of workers in housing support services will be announced in due course.

To register a worker must satisfy the criteria for registration. This includes holding the appropriate qualifications for the job they do and being able to evidence good character.

Applicants for registration who do not hold required qualifications may, if they meet all the other eligibility criteria for registration eg evidence of 'good character', be granted registration subject to the condition that they achieve the required qualifications within a specified period - normally their first three year period of registration.

To register with the SSSC you must also:

  • work in a service that is registered by the Care Commission
  • not currently be registered with another regulatory body.
