| Workers in care home services for adults applying to be registered with the SSSC |
The SSSC began registering:
When do applications forms have to be submitted to the SSSC?Managers of care home services for adults had until 31 May 2009 to get their applications into the SSSC. This was to make sure that we are able to process applications in time for workers to be registered before required registration applies to their post.Managers of care home services for adults who have not yet submitted applicaitons for registration must do so now as a matter of urgency. What happens if workers are not appropriately registered by the deadlines? The new regulations for required registration mean that employers will be committing an offence if, after November 2009 (for managers of care home services for adults), they employ a worker in a care service who is not registered with the SSSC or another relevant regulatory body eg the Nursing and Midwifery Council. This has major implications for the delivery of services and employers will have to be clear about which of their staff are required to be registered. The SSSC is developing enhanced online access to the Register so that employers can monitor the registration status of their staff. The SSSC and the Care Commission will be providing information for employers of social service workers to make them aware of their of responsibilities in relation to the new regulations. New recruitsAll recruits starting new employment as managers of care home services for adults should apply for registration as soon as possible on starting their new employment and should achieve registration within six months of taking up that employment or until their application for registration is determined, whichever is the shorter. |
| Applications to be submitted to the SSSC by | Date of required registration | |

To register a worker must satisfy the criteria for registration. This includes holding the appropriate qualifications for the job they do and being able to evidence good character. Applicants for registration who do not hold the required qualifications may, if they meet all the other eligibility criteria for registration eg evidence of ‘good character’, be granted registration subject to the condition that they achieve the required qualifications within a specified period which will normally be three years when they apply for re-registration.
To register with the SSSC you must also work in a service that is registered by the Care Commission.
