Social workers - Post Registration Training and Learning
sssc_prtlThe Post Registration Training and Learning (PRTL) requirements are set down by the SSSC's (Registration) Rules. These state the training and learning requirements that all registered social workers, ie workers who hold a Diploma in Social Work (DipSW) or an equivalent award, must meet in order to ensure their continued suitability for registration.

On 5 June 2006 amendments to the SSSC’s Registration Rules were approved and revised PRTL requirements have been introduced for registered social workers. From that date social workers who are registered for the first time or whose registration is renewed by the SSSC will be subject to the revised PRTL requirements.

Newly Qualified Social Workers

For the purposes of registration, newly qualified social workers (NQSWs) are students who have been awarded the Diploma in Social Work (DipSW) or a new undergraduate or postgraduate social work degree after 1 April 2006.

Social work graduates who intend to work full time in social service work will have agreed to complete 24 days of Post Registration Training and Learning (PRTL) within 12 months of the date on which their registration was granted. After they have completed their first 12 months of practice and their PRTL they must submit their record of achievement to the SSSC on or before the 14 month anniversary of the date on which their registration was granted.

Graduates who are not intending to work full time ie 35 hours a week, will have agreed to complete 24 days of Post Registration Training and Learning (PRTL) within 18 months of the date on which their registration was granted. After they have completed their first 18 months of practice and their PRTL they must submit their record of achievement to the SSSC on or before the 20 month anniversary of the date on which their registration was granted.

During the remainder of their registration period all these workers must complete a further 10 days PRTL.

Your PRTL can be signed by your line manager.

Social workers registered or have renewed their registration on or after 5 June 2006

All registered workers are required to undertake the same amount of PRTL regardless of the number of hours worked (ie this means even if you work part time you still have to do the same amount of PRTL as a full time member of staff).
