Practice qualifications

  • HNC Childhood Practice at SCQF Level 7.

  • SVQ Social Services (Children and Young People) at SCQF Level 7.
  • BA (Hons) Social Work (or equivalent).
  • Four mandatory units from the SVQ Level 4 Playwork (at SCQF Level 9) plus the following four optional units
    • DV1H 04 - Obtain the facilities and services required for play provision
    • DV1G 04 - Manage and develop play facilities and services
    • DV19 04 - Develop and implement procedures to safeguard children and young people
    • DV1N 04 - Research, design and facilitate possibilities for self-directed play
    plus the following unit from the SVQ 3 Playwork (at SCQF Level 7) DV1K 04 - Plan and support self-directed play.
  • Four mandatory units from the SVQ Level 4 Social Services (Children and Young People)

    • H5VT 04 Maintain effective communication systems and practice
    • H5VV 04 Lead practice for health and safety in the work setting
    • H5VW 04 Take responsibility for the continuing professional development of yourself and others
    • H5VX 04 Lead practice that promotes the safeguarding of children and young people

    plus an additional four units from the list below:

    • H5W6 04 Evaluate the environment for children and families
    • H5WJ 04 Advocate with and on behalf of children and young people
    • H5WK 04 Support parents and carers to acquire skills to care for and protect babies, children and young people
    • H5W2 04 Lead the physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of children
    • H5W3 04 Lead the support of children's communication
    • H5W4 04 Lead the support for children?s creativity
    • H5W5 04 Lead the support for children?s mathematical learning, exploration and problem solving.
  • HNC Additional Support Needs (Supporting the Individual).
  • Montessori Partnership, Montessori Diploma in Early Years Education plus one of the following SQA units:

    • H8MM 34 Health wellbeing and safeguarding
    • H5LF 04 Promote the safeguarding of children and young people.
  • SVQ 3 Playwork at SCQF Level 7.

    SVQ in Playwork at SCQF level 7 (revised 2018) we accept this in part, for practitioners in day care of children’s services. Candidates who achieve the qualification will be required to gain two additional SVQ units from SVQ Social Services (Children and Young people) at SCQF level 7. These units are: 

    • H5LC04 (SCDCCLD0301) Promote effective communication
    • H5LF04 (SCDHSC0034) Promote the safeguarding of children and young People.

    Qualifications meeting requirements of other regulatory bodies

  • A qualification meeting the registration requirements for the following professional groups regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council:

    • Occupational Therapists
    • Art, Music and Drama Therapists
    • Physiotherapists
    • Speech and Language Therapists
    • Practitioner Psychologists.
  • A qualification meeting the registration requirements of the General Teaching Council (Scotland), Nursing and Midwifery Council or the General Medical Council.
  • Degree/Diploma in Community Education or equivalent as recognised by the Standards Council for Community Learning and Development for Scotland Approvals Committee.
  • BA Social Pedagogy (University of Aberdeen).
  • BA Curative Education (University of Aberdeen).
  • BA (Hons) Professional Studies (Playwork).
  • Certificate in Residential Care of Children and Young People.
  • Certificate in Hospital Play Specialism (HPSET).
  • Degree/Diploma in Curative Education.
  • Four mandatory units from the SVQ Children's Care Learning and Development (Level 4) plus a minimum of five units from:
    • DR6X 04 Co-ordinate provision for babies and children under three years in partnership with their families
    • DR7E 04 Develop and support children's early learning in partnership with teachers
    • DT1C 04 Support and evaluate the curriculum to support children's early learning
    • DR88 04 Evaluate, assess and support the physical, intellectual, emotional and social development of children
    • DR82 04 Evaluate, assess and support children's communication
    • DR84 04 Evaluate, support and assess children's creativity
    • DR86 04 Evaluate, assess and support children's mathematical learning, exploration and problem solving.
  • Foundation Degree in Steiner Waldorf Early Childhood Education (Plymouth University) plus the SQA unit (DT4M 04) Protect and Promote Children's Rights or the SQA unit (DM5J 12) Supporting Children's Rights and Entitlements (Higher) or SQA Unit Children and Young People's Rights: Provision, Protection and Participation (F3S4 34).
  • Group of 21 credits from the SCOTVEC modules in child care listed in day care of children qualification criteria list B (currently recognised for the purpose of registration with the Scottish Child Care Education Board).
  • HNC Child Care and Education.
  • HNC Social Care with either SVQ Playwork (Level 3) or SVQ 3 Early Years Care and Education.
  • HNC Supporting Learning Needs.
  • HND Supporting Learning Needs.
  • HNC Working with Children in Early Years.
  • HNC Early Education and Childcare (at SCQF level 7).
  • Level 1 of the Open University (OU) Diploma of Higher Education in Childhood Practice/Level 1 of the OU Foundation Degree in Early Years E123 plus E124 or E100 plus E115 or E105.
  • Montessori Centre International, International Diploma in Montessori Pedagogy plus one of the following SQA units:
    • DT4M04 Protect and Promote Children's Rights
    • F3S434 Children and Young People's Rights: Provision, Protection and Participation.
  • NVQ Health and Social Care (Children and Young People) (Level 3), plus SQA unit DM4112 play in early education and child care (Higher) with one of the following SQA units ED2 L12 child development: an introduction or DM3X12 child development: birth to twelve years (Higher).
  • The Open University (OU) Diploma of Higher Education in Childhood Practice/OU Foundation Degree in Early Years.

  • The Open University (OU) modules E100 The early years developing practice and the E105 Professional practice in early years.

  • Senior Certificate in Residential Care of Children and Young People.
  • NVQ Children's Care Learning and Development (Level 3).
  • NVQ Health and Social Care (Adults) (Level 3), plus SQA unit DM4112 play in early education and child care (Higher), plus SQA unit DM5J11 supporting children's rights and entitlements (Higher) or SQA Unit F3S4 34 children and young people's rights: provision, protection and participation or HSC34 promote the wellbeing and protection of children and young people with one of the following SQA units ED2 L12 child development: an introduction or DM3X12 child development: birth to twelve years (Higher).
  • SVQ/NVQ Child Care and Education (Level 3).
  • SVQ/NVQ Early Years Care and Education (Level 3).
  • SVQ/NVQ Health and Social Care (Children and Young People)(Level 4).
  • SCOTEC Certificate in the Educational Care of Severely and Profoundly Mentally Handicapped Children.
  • SVQ/NVQ 3 Caring for Children and Young People or SVQ Health and Social Care (Children and Young People), plus SQA unit DM4112 play in early education and child care (Higher) with one of the following units SQA unit ED2 L12 child development: an introduction or SQA unit DM3X12 child development: birth to twelve years (Higher).

  • SVQ 3 Health and Social Care (Adults) at SCQF Level 7, plus SQA unit DM4112 play in early education and child care (Higher), plus SQA unit DM5J11 supporting children's rights and entitlements (Higher) or SQA Unit F3S4 34 children and young people's rights: provision, protection and participation or HSC34 promote the wellbeing and protection of children and young people with one of the following SQA units ED2 L12 child development: an introduction or (DM3X12 child development: birth to twelve years (Higher).

  • Level 3 Diploma in Children's Care Learning and Development plus the SQA unit DT4M04 protect and promote children's rights or H5LF 04 (SCDHSC0034) promote the safeguarding of children and young people plus HNC Social Care (or an award of certificated knowledge with 96 credits at or above SCQF Level 7).
  • Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People's Workforce plus the SQA unit DK4H04 promote the wellbeing and protection of children and young people or H5LF 04 (SCDHSC0034) promote the safeguarding of children and young people, plus the SQA unit DM4112 play in early education and child care with one of the following SQA units ED2L12 child development: an introduction or DM3X12 child development: birth to twelve years (Higher).
