Staff Supporting children with additional needs

 

Who is it for?

Staff working in support roles in residential or community based services to support children who have additional needs (e.g. complex physical care needs or learning disabilities).

List of Skill Areas & Knowledge

Staff should select and complete 4 units from the following list. Unit selection should be based on job role and candidate need.
HSC 036  

Contribute to the assessment of children and young peoples’ needs and the development of care plans

HSC 315

Work with children and young people with additional requirements to meet their personal support needs

HSC 316 Support the needs of children and young people with additional requirements
HSC 323 Contribute to child care practice in group living
HSC 325 Contribute to protecting children and young people from danger, harm and abuse
HSC 352

Support individuals to continue therapies

HSC 357 Carry out extended feeding techniques to ensure individuals’ nutritional and fluid intake
HSC 369

Support individuals with specific communication needs

HSC 375

Administer medication to individuals

HSC 389 Work with carers, families and key people to maintain contact with individuals

The HNC Units “Supporting Children and Families”, “Contribute to Meeting Health Care Needs”, “Working in Partnership with People who have a Learning Disability” or “Working with Autism” may cover some of the underpinning knowledge for the units listed above.

SCQF Credit Rating & Level:
The HN Units“Supporting Children and Families”, “Contribute to Meeting Health Care Needs”, “Working in Partnership with People who have a Learning Disability” or “Working with Autism” are set at SCQF Level 7. The SCQF level for the SVQ units will be published at a later date.
Links & Progression Routes:
This skills set links with the  SVQ3 in Health and Social Care and to the HNC Health & Social Care.
Assessment:
The units in this skills set must be assessed in accordance with the SVQ assessment guidance published SQA/City & Guilds for the SVQs in Health & Social Care. The HN unit must be assessed in line with the guidance published by SQA for the HNC Health & Social Care
