Staff Working in Housing Support Roles

 

Who is it for?

Helping individuals to move into and remain in their own homes, through providing general counselling, advice, assistance and support are now integral parts of health and social services for vulnerable people.  Workers in housing support services need to create an environment in which the expectations are clear, consistent and reasonable in terms of what the individual can and cannot do. This Skills Set is intended to identify the skills areas needed by housing support workers, and supervisors, to achieve this.

In addition to the units listed here, there are other units that staff may find relevant to their job roles. While these are not included in the Skills Set, staff may wish to undertake these units as part of their ongoing CPD.

This Skills Set is for housing support workers and supervisors as well as people transferring or considering a move to work in this area of practice.

List of Skill Areas & Knowledge
Staff should select and complete 4 units from the following list. Unit selection should be based on job role and candidate need.
HSC 329   Contribute to planning, monitoring and reviewing the delivery of service for individuals
HSC 330

Support individuals to access and use services and facilities
HSC 331 Support individuals to develop and maintain social networks and relationships
HSC 335 Contribute to the protection of individuals from harm and abuse
HSC 339 Carry out assessment to identify and prioritise needs
HSC 343

Support individuals to live at home
HSC 344

Support individuals to retain, regain and develop the skills to manage their lives and environment
HSC 349

Enable individuals to access housing and accommodation
HSC 366

Support individuals to represent their own needs and wishes at decision making forums
HSC 383 Support individuals to move and settle into new living environments
HSC 386 Assist in the transfer of individuals between agencies and services
HSC 394 Contribute to the development and running of support groups
HSC 3100 Participate in inter-disciplinary team working to support individuals

The HNC Units “Social Care: Housing Support” and “Social Care: Homelessness” may cover some of the underpinning knowledge for the units listed above.
SCQF Credit Rating & Level:
The HNC Units “Social Care: Housing Support” and “Social Care: Homelessness” are levelled at SCQF level 7. The SCQF level for the SVQ units will be published at a later date.

Assessment:
The units in this skills set must be assessed in accordance with the SVQ assessment guidance published SQA/City & Guilds for the SVQs in Health & Social Care.
