Working in Secure Accommodation for Young People

Who is it for?

This skills set has been created for staff working with young people who are placed in either a close support unit or a secure setting. It is important to recognise that these young people require the same care and attention as any young person who is placed in any care setting and any skills sets must recognise this. The reason why young people may be placed in either a close support unit or a secure setting are varied, but not all young people in these settings have committed any offences or are involved in any offending behaviour. Therefore the SVQ units listed reflect this. All young people in care should have care plans, and in light of the recent research identifying that children in public care fail in the education system these both seem important choices. Therefore, SVQ Units HSC 36 and HSC 39 should be part of any residential child care worker’s choice of units when choosing from the list below.

In addition to the units listed here, there are other units that staff may find relevant to their job roles (e.g. HSC 399 “Develop and sustain effective working relationships with staff in other agencies”; HSC 3100 “Participate in inter-disciplinary team working to support individuals”). Whilst these are not included in the Skills Set, staff may wish to undertake these units as part of their ongoing CPD.

All care staff working in close support units or secure settings. This skills set will also be applicable for staff transferring to work in this area of practice.
