Working With People With Physical Disabilities

 

Who is it for?

People with a physical disability have particular needs and require support to be full and active members of the community. This skills set has been created for staff working with people with physical disabilities in a variety of settings and focuses on the skill area required to achieve this. This skills set should be read in conjunction with the “Skills Set  for Staff  Working with People with Complex Physical Care Needs”.

    • Staff working in supported accommodation
    • Staff in day care services
    • Staff in Respite Care Services
    • Home carers
    • Support workers in schools
    • Personal assistants employed by the client

This skills set will also be applicable for staff transferring to work in this area of practice.

List of Skill Areas & Knowledge

Staff should select and complete 4 units from the following list. Unit selection should be based on job role and candidate need.
HSC 315   Work with children and young people with additional requirements to meet their personal support needs
HSC 343

Support individuals to live at home

HSC 344 Support individuals to retain, regain and develop the skills to manage their lives and environment
HSC 329 Support Individuals to access and use services and facilities
HSC 352 Support individuals to continue therapies
HSC 360

Move and position individuals

HSC 369 Support individuals with specific communication needs
HSC 387 Work in collaboration with carers in the caring role

Some of the underpinning knowledge for the units listed above could be covered by the HNC Unit “Contribute to Meeting Health Care Needs” (available as a distance learning Unit from SQA).

SCQF Credit Rating & Level:
The HN Unit, “Contribute to Meeting Health Care Needs” is set at SCQF Level 7. The SCQF level for the SVQ units will be published at a later date.
Links & Progression Routes:
This skills set links with the  SVQ3 in Health and Social Care and to the HNC Health & Social Care.
Assessment:
The units in this skills set must be assessed in accordance with the SVQ assessment guidance published SQA/City & Guilds for the SVQs in Health & Social Care. The HN unit must be assessed in line with the guidance published by SQA for the HNC Health & Social Care
