Induction isn't separate from the rest of workers' development. In undertaking activities linked to induction, workers for whom the SVQ is the preferred qualification will be able to generate some material which can support assessment for their SVQ or Skills Set if they already have their initial qualification. For others, induction can provide a starting point for their initial Post Registration Training and Learning or (for experienced workers joining the organisation or moving to new roles in the organisation) a useful starting point for their ongoing learning & development.
It should also be noted that for those supporting workers through induction, there is an opportunity for them to further their own development.
Given the flexibility of the SVQ award structures and diversity of work settings, only the links to the Core units have been noted below. These units cover, values and protection of vulnerable individuals, communication, health & safety and professional & personal development.

For newly qualified social workers, there is an expectation that they will consolidate their social work skills, knowledge and values immediately following qualification. Employers may find it helpful to use the Standards in Social Work Education which provide the framework for the social work degree as the basis for enabling newly qualified social workers to plan and complete their Post Registration Training & Learning. These requirements are :
- Prepare for, and work with, individuals, families, carers, groups and communities to assess their needs and circumstances
- Plan, carry out, review and evaluate social work practice with individuals, families, carers, groups, communities and other professionals
- Assess and manage risk to individuals, families, carers, groups, communities, self and colleagues
- Demonstrate professional competence in social work practice
- Manage and be accountable, with supervision and support, for their own social work practice within their organisation
- Support individuals to represent and manage their needs, views and circumstances
