We are the regulator for the social service workforce in Scotland. Our work means the people of Scotland can count on social services being provided by a trusted, skilled and confident workforce.

We protect the public by registering social service workers, setting standards for their practice, conduct, training and education and by supporting their professional development. Where people fall below the standards of practice and conduct we can investigate and take action.

The Care Inspectorate regulates care services in Scotland. If you are unhappy about a care service, you can complain to them through their website: http://www.careinspectorate.com/index.php/complaints or call them on 0345 600 9527.

Do you use social services or have a family member who does?

Most people will come into contact with social services at some time in their lives. It might be you or a family member that uses a care service, such as your child going to nursery or parent living in a care home. You’ll know how important a quality care service can be.

The SSSC Codes of Practice set out clear standards of conduct for workers. If you are concerned that your worker or a worker that provides a service for someone you care for, does not meet the standards set out in the SSSC Codes of Practice you should let their manager or employer know straight away. The employer may then contact the SSSC. You can also contact us directly at any time to discuss your concerns.

A career in social services can give you an important role in another person’s life. There are many opportunities to progress, have an important role in supporting others and get a sense of personal achievement from knowing you are helping others.

There’s a great demand for social service workers from providing practical help and support to keeping vulnerable adults or children safe. It’s a career for people who like people.

We have a responsibility to plan for a workforce able to meet future demand. Over the next three years over 30,000 social service workers will register with the SSSC for the first time. This will lead to a trained and qualified workforce with the potential to transform social services.

Workforce development and planning, registration and the involvement of people who use services and carers adds value to services and benefits the sector and makes sure that people receive effective services from a safe and skilled workforce.
