Finding a job in social care

Many jobs within social care – particularly residential care – need people who can work flexible hours. There are opportunities to work on a part-time basis, or work particular times to fit in with your commitments. You should ask about this when you apply for a job.

Gaining experience of the sector through voluntary work will increase your options when it comes to applying for a job.

If you feel you have the essential skills and abilities to help then you should consider a career within social care. For job opportunities please call Job Seekers Direct on 0845 60 60 234.

Do I need qualifications?

As well as work based SVQs, there are specific social care qualifications available – ask your local college for details. However, there are other qualifications including degree courses which will allow you to gain entry into a career in social care although you will have to undertake social care qualifications once you begin working in the sector.

Social care workers will register with the Scottish Social Services Council. Click here for more information about registration. The SSSC accept a range of qualifications.  You can get a list of the qualifications by emailing enquiries@sssc.uk.com or call 0845 60 30 891.

Funding for training

If you are considering doing a social care course, contact your local college to discuss funding. Depending on your circumstances you may be eligible for the payment of course fees or grants.

Work based qualifications (SVQs) are usually funded by employers and you can discuss the options directly with them. Once you are working in social care there are opportunities for further education and training. The employee development officer for your organisation will be able to give advice.
