Care Commission Officers
In 2002 the Scottish Social Services Council consulted widely on the qualifications criteria required for workers in phase one of registration. The comments and feedback received were taken into consideration and the final qualification criteria have been set. This information sheet sets out the qualifications required by Care Commission Officers.
To be registered as a Care Commission Officer, workers must:
- be employed as ‘authorised persons’, in terms of sections 25 and 27 of the Regulation of Care (Scotland) Act, 2001, by the Care Commission at the time of registration
- hold a practitioner qualification in an occupation that is necessary for the delivery of a regulated care service (listed overleaf).
Regulation of Care Award
Care Commission Officers must satisfy all other eligibility criteria and hold one of the qualifications listed overleaf, we will register them subject to the condition that they gain the Regulation of Care Award within a specified period of time.
Care Commission Officers must hold one of the following:
- Diploma in Social Work or equivalent
- SVQ Level 4 in Care
- a qualification meeting the registration requirements of the General Teaching Council, Nursing and Midwifery Council, General Medical Council, British Medical Council, British Dental Association, Royal Pharmaceutical Society, British Society of Psychologists or the following professional groups regulated by the Health Professions Council:
- Occupational Therapists
- Arts, Music and Drama Therapists
- Physiotherapists
- Speech and Language Therapists
- Chiropodists/Podiatrists
- Clinical Scientists
- Dieticians
- Medical Laboratory Technicians
- Orthoptists
- Prosthetists and Orthotists
- Paramedics
- Radiographers
- SVQ Level 3 in Caring for Children and Young People, Promoting Independence, or Care , along with either an HNC in Social Care or another form of certificated underpinning knowledge from the following:
- Any other qualification which provides evidence satisfactory to the Council of an individual’s academic achievement equivalent to or above SCQF Level 7* with a minimum of 96 academic credits
- Group of 21 credits from the SCOTVEC modules in child care listed in Appendix 1 (currently recognised for the purpose of registration with the Scottish Child Care and Education Board)
- The Scottish Nursery Nurse Examination Board Certificate
- The National Nursery Examination Board Certificate (NNEB)
- Certificate of HE in Curative Education
- Degree or Diploma in Curative Education
- Degree or Diploma in Community Education or equivalent, as recognised by Community Education Validation & Endorsement Unit, Communities Scotland
- Certificate in the Residential Care of Children and Young People
- Senior Certificate in the Residential Care of Children and Young People
- Diploma in Teaching Mentally Handicapped Adults
- One of the following qualifications relevant to Home Care:
- Diploma in Domiciliary Care Management
- PDA Certificate in the Supervisions of the Delivery of Care Services
- Advanced Certificate in Supervising and Managing Personal Social Services
- One of the following qualifications relevant to the Early Years, Education and Child Care sector:
- Nursery Nurse Examination Board Certificate
- Scottish Nursery Nurse Examination Board Certificate
- HNC in Working with Children
- HNC Child Care and Education
- PDA Child Care and Education
- SVQ Level 3 in Early Years Care and Education
- BA Childhood Studies
- SVQ Level 3 Play Work
- BA Early Childhood Studies
- One of the following relevant housing qualifications:
- HNC in Housing Studies – undergraduate which is being replaced by the Chartered Institute of Housing’s (CIH) level 4 Diploma in Housing
- HNC in Housing Studies (management)
- BA (Hons) Housing Studies
- BSc (Hons) Housing Studies
- BA (Hons) Housing
- BSc (Hons) Housing
- BA (Hons) in Housing and Development
- Diploma/BA (Hons) in Housing Studies (management)
- Professional Diploma in Housing
- Foundation Degree in Housing
- Diploma/MA in Housing
- Diploma in Housing and Development
- Diploma in Higher Education/BA (Hons) in Housing Studies
- Diploma/BA (Hons) Housing Management and Development
- BSc (Hons) Housing Policy and Management
- Chartered Institute of Housing - Professional Diploma in Housing Studies
- Chartered Institute of Housing Graduate Conversion Course
- Post Graduate Diploma/MA in Housing
- Post Graduate Diploma/MSc in Housing
- Post Graduate Diploma/MA in Housing Policy and Management
