Scottish Social Services Council

Consultation on issues relating to workers in seasonal services

The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) is the regulatory body for workers in day care of children services. There are a number of criteria which applicants for registration must meet and one of these is that they hold or gain a relevant qualification from a list of acceptable qualifications which the SSSC has set for each part of the Register. The SSSC consulted on the qualifications acceptable for these workers in 2003 and set them in 2004.

Since then we have received comments and views about the practical challenges that employers would face in supporting staff in seasonal services to meet these qualification requirements because of the occasional and temporary employment patterns. We have listened to these concerns and discussed them with relevant officials in the Scottish Government who have agreed that we may consult on a particular approach to the registration of this group of workers. The attached consultation paper sets out the proposal and invites your views on it. The consultation will close on 5 May 2008 and I hope that you will take this opportunity to comment.

I would also like to take this opportunity to say that the SSSC recognises the work that all social services employers undertake to support their workers to meet the qualification requirements for registration and we are keen to offer advice and assistance particularly in relation to the development of training plans and the provision of information about access to required qualifications.
