The Forgotten Citizens Conference - a national conference celebrating Learning Disability Week 2008

The conference is being organised by the Scottish Consortium for Learning Disability and The Open University. It is being supported by IRISS (Institute for Research & Innovation in Social Services).
The Forgotten Citizens Conference aims to:
- stimulate new research into the social history of people with learning disabilities in Scotland
- encourage people living in Scotland who have learning disabilities to tell their stories and to ensure that these stories are not lost
- explore some historical reasons why people with learning disabilities in Scotland became forgotten citizens and to compare this with how things are today
- create a space for discussion and debate.
You should attend this conference if you are:
- a researcher with experience in the field of learning disability
- keen to get involved in learning disability research
- interested in the personal stories of people with learning disabilities
- interested in researching the personal stories of people with learning disabilities
- a person with a learning disability or a family carer
- a supporter or someone working alongside people with learning disabilities.
Speakers include:
- Professor Dorothy Atkinson and Mabel Cooper (The Open University)
- Lisa Curtice (Scottish Consortium for Learning Disability)
- Jo Cochrane (Trainer and Consultant)
- David Kinloch (Quality Action Group)
- James Withers (Member of Scottish Youth Parliament).
The organisers are keen to get people with lots of different backgrounds and from different parts of Scotland at the conference. Places will be allocated at the conference to try and make sure we get a good mix of people.
There will be a limited number of free places for people with learning disabilities and supporters if they will be supporting people to come along to and take part in the conference. There will also be a limited number of free places available for family carers.
If you aren't able to come to the conference the main speakers will be recorded and you will be able to listen to their presentations on the SCLD website after the event.
