Scottish Social Services Council

Work with us to raise standards in social services across Scotland

Do you work in day care of children services, for example, a nursery, playgroup or out of school care? Are you a manager/lead practitioner or practitioner in a day care of children service?

People eligible to register with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) as one of the above workers could also be eligible to sit on the SSSC Sub-committees that will consider and make decisions about matters regarding the registration of social service workers and allegations of misconduct about registered social service workers. The SSSC was set up to increase the protection of people who use social services, to raise standards of practice and to increase public confidence in the sector.

  • Sub-committees consist of Lay Members and Due Regard Members
  • The work of the Sub-committees is regulated by the SSSC (Registration) Rules and SSSC (Conduct) Rules
  • Time-commitment is up to 12 days per year. Expenses are paid including an attendance fee.
  • Sub-committee members must be independent of the SSSC so please do not apply if you are related to or closely associated with Council Members or staff of the SSSC.

If you are eligible to register as one of the above workers and are interested in becoming a member of the SSSC Sub-committees for workers in day care services for children, please view further details on our website or contact Selena Graham to request an application pack on 01382 207147 or email selena.graham@sssc.uk.com The closing date for applications is Friday 6 April 2007.

Morag Alexander, Convener of the SSSC said:

"The SSSC began to register workers in 2003 and this is the first time that the social service workforce has been regulated. (Workers in early years services are one of the key groups of the workforce that are now registering with the SSSC.) They will join their colleagues in health and teaching in becoming a regulated profession.

“We know that the vast majority of social service workers provide an excellent service and work to the highest standards. We need people to be members of our Sub-committees to ensure that only suitable people are on the SSSC Register. We want to protect people who use services by raising standards in the social service workforce."
