Scottish Social Services Council

Registration information sessions for early education and child care workers

The Scottish Social Services Council began to register the social service workforce on 1 April 2003.

The part of the Register for early education and child care workers opens in October 2006. Registration of managers/lead practitioners of early education and child care services begins October 2006. Registration of practitioners will begin March 2007 and registration of support workers in early education and child care services commences in October 2008. For further information please read our article about early education and child care workers.

The SSSC is holding information sessions for managers/lead practitioners and practitioners in early education and child care services in August, September and October.

Workers will be registered by categorising the type of work they undertake rather than by job title. The definitions of managers/lead practitioners and practitioners are noted below:

Managers/lead practitioners in early education and child care are defined as workers who hold responsibility for the overall development, management and quality assurance of service provision including the supervision of staff and the management of resources.

Practitioners in early education and child care are defined as workers who identify and meet the care, support and learning needs of children and contribute to the development and quality assurance of informal learning activities and/or curriculum. They may also be responsible for the supervision of other workers.
