Qualifications for managers in housing support services

Managers must obtain both a practice and a management qualification.

A manager is a worker who is responsible for the overall professional management of the direct provision, supervision, and quality assurance of care and support provided in a housing support service.

You must obtain one of the following qualifications:

  • SVQ 4 Social Services and Healthcare (at SCQF level 9)
  • BA (Hons) Social Work (or equivalent)
  • Degree or Diploma in Community Education or equivalent as recognised by the Standards Council for Community Learning and Development for Scotland Approvals Committee
  • A qualification meeting the registration requirements of the General Teaching Council (Scotland), Nursing and Midwifery Council, General Medical Council or the following professional groups regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council:
    • Occupational Therapists
    • Art, Music and Drama Therapists
    • Physiotherapists
    • Speech and Language Therapists
    • Practitioner Psychologists.

  • SVQ Leadership and Management for Care Services (LMCS) Level 4
  • Any award in management that is certificated at or above SCQF Level 8 (minimum of 60 credits) showing evidence the award has been mapped against the National Occupational Standards (NOS): Leadership and Management for Care Services.

Acceptable QCF Diplomas for managers of housing support services

  • Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care Services (Adults Advanced Practice) from Wales and Northern Ireland

plus

  • SVQ Leadership and Management for Care Services (LMCS) Level 4

or

  • Any award in management that is certificated at or above SCQF Level 8 (Minimum of 60 credits) showing evidence the award has been mapped against the National Occupational Standards (NOS): Leadership and Management for Care Services.

Additional accepted qualifications

  • SVQ 4 Health and Social Care (at SCQF Levels 8 and 9) plus SVQ Leadership and Management for Care Services (LMCS) Level 4 or any award in management that is certificated at or above SCQF Level 8 (minimum of 60 credits) showing evidence the award has been mapped against the National Occupational Standards (NOS): Leadership and Management for Care Services
  • Diploma in Social Pedagogy
  • BA Social Pedagogy

Previously accepted qualifications for managers in housing support services

Other qualifications have previously been included in the qualification criteria for managers in housing support services. You may hold one of them. The SSSC continues to accept these awards for registration.

  • S/NVQ Care, Community Justice (Work with Offending Behaviour) (Level 4) or Community Justice (Work with Victims, Survivors and Witnesses) (Level 4)
  • NVQ Community Justice (Work with Offending Behaviour) (Level 4) or Community Justice (Work with Victims, Survivors and Witnesses) (Level 4) to include or with the addition of a value base unit ('O' unit or Principles of Care)
  • Degree or Diploma in Curative Education (University of Aberdeen).

Management qualifications

  • CIH Undergraduate Professional Diploma /SCQF level 9 and 10
  • CIH Professional Diploma – Postgraduate /SCQF level 11
  • A qualification meeting the corporate membership requirements of the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH)
  • SVQ Registered Manager in Health and Social Care (Level 4) (Registered Manager's Award)
  • S/NVQ Management (Level 4)
  • an assessed programme of study (either through a taught programme or by portfolio) where a minimum of 60 credit points covers management, at post qualifying or advanced level, awarded by the PQ Consortium for Social Work in Scotland
  • The Diploma in Public Administration.

The following management qualifications are acceptable if they were started before May 2010:

  • VRQ Level 4 (at SCQF level 7) CIH Certificate in Housing – Supported Housing Pathway
  • VRQ Level 4 (at SCQF level 8) CIH Diploma in Housing.
