What qualifications do I need to register with the SSSC?

To register a worker must satisfy the criteria for registration. This includes holding the appropriate qualifications for the job they do.
Applicants for registration who do not hold required qualifications may, if they meet all the other eligibility criteria for registration eg evidence of ‘good character’, be granted registration subject to the condition that they achieve the required qualifications within a specified period normally their first three year period of registration.
You will be registered by the function that you carry out in your job, rather than your job title. Please click on the option below that best describes you. Clicking on the relevant function will lead you to the qualifications you are required to have for registration with the SSSC.
Social workers, social work students and Care Commission officers are listed separately below the table.
If you are carrying out the functions of a social worker and hold the Diploma in Social Work (DipSW) or equivalent you are required to register with the SSSC.
If you are a social work student studying the new degree, postgraduate or fast track programme you must be registered with the SSSC for the duration of your course. If you are studying for the Diploma in Social Work (DipSW) you do not need to register yet. You should apply to register as a qualified social worker when you have completed the DipSW.
To be registered as a Care Commission Officer, you must be employed by the Scottish Commission for the Regulation of Care (Care Commission) as a Care Commission Officer and hold a practitioner qualification in an occupation that is necessary for the delivery of a regulated care service.
If your job function is not described then you are not currently required to register with the SSSC. If you would like to check this or the qulaifications listed under the relevant function listed for your role you can call the SSSC on Lo-call: 0845 60 30 891.
