Dundee - City of Discovery
The City of Dundee is a thriving centre of social activity, scientific knowledge, educational excellence and cultural verve. Major investment in recent years has seen the city develop its restaurants, bars, music venues and shopping facility into some of Scotland’s finest.
Dundee is a very lively city at night with numerous bars and restaurants to suit everyone’s taste including Thai, Chinese, Mexican, Turkish, Italian and good old fish and chips. Perth Road, the hub of the city night life, features bars and restaurants including the Dundee Contemporary Arts Centre (DCA). The DCA, a bar and restaurant both by day and night, contains a cinema showing mainstream and contemporary films as well as art exhibitions by local, national and international artists. Several bars in the city also feature live bands on Friday and Saturday nights and Dundee has produced bands such as The View and Snow Patrol.
There are many events throughout the year to delight, inform and entertain both residents and visitors to the city including jazz and blues, guitar, book and mountain festivals. During the summer months Dundee’s city centre streets play host to theatre shows, arts and crafts fairs, farmer’s markets and continental markets.
With over 1,000 exhibitors and top guest chefs the Dundee Flower and Food Festival at Camperdown Park is a popular event. Just 15 minutes drive from Dundee is the Royal Air Force Base at Leuchars. During the first weekend in September the Leuchars Airshow is held which attracts over 100,000 visitors from all over the world. The Airshow features aerobatic displays from all types of aircraft from all over the world.
The more adventurous individual can choose from a wide variety of sports and activities including clay pigeon shooting, gliding and parachuting, climbing, driving, mountain biking and rambling. Dundee is surrounded by beautiful countryside and parks and gardens to suit everyone’s needs from gentle strolls to hill climbing. There are over 30 golf courses within easy reach of the city centre, including the championship courses at both St Andrew’s and Carnoustie.
If you are interested in history, arts and culture then Dundee has much to offer. The city is home to one of the few remaining Reparatory Theatre’s in the UK. The Dundee Rep Theatre is home to the Scottish Dance Theatre and the Dundee Rep Ensemble. The McManus Galleries and Museum is a splendid Gothic Revival-style building housing Dundee’s main art collection and the RRS Discovery is anchored at Discovery Point. For younger visitors Dundee also has a science museum, Sensation, which is fun for children as well as running exciting and educational workshops. Nearby within the County of Angus is located Glamis Castle and in Perthshire, Scone Palace.
Dundee is an innovative and dynamic city with a go-ahead character surrounded by beautiful, unspoilt countryside, spectacular beaches and championship golf courses. Just a short drive east from Dundee is the small, busy and picturesque fishing village of Broughty Ferry further north, the Angus glens. The Angus coastal trail offers some of the most spectacular scenery along Scotland's eastern edge with the North Sea.
